During two evening sessions the Grosvenor Museum and Military Museum have been working with West Cheshire College’s Adults Literacy groups. In the first session the adults learnt all about Mabel and her life, her work as a volunteer nurse and World War I. They were asked to write down anything they found inspiring or interesting ready to use in the next weeks session.
During the second session poet Dominic Berry worked with both groups to create their own poetry inspired by Mabel. Dominic asked the students to write down everything they could think of about Mabel, imagining her in the hospital, imagining what she was feeling, what she was thinking and what was happening around her. From this they picked 5 sentences or phrases they thought were best and many read them out. From this short but effective exercise the students produced some wonderful poetry.
All the poems which were read out were very emotive. The students will have a few weeks to continue work on their poetry and Dominic has kindly offered to give them advice on finishing them off. These poems will then be displayed in the Military Museum alongside the other Mabel’s War project work.
